Research Group on Taxonomy of Phlebotomine sand flies/Epidemiology, Diagnosis and Control of Leishmaniases

Taxoflebs

Leaders: Edelberto Santos Dias

Focus: Leishmaniasis

Mission:

The group’s mission is to generate, disseminate and transfer scientific knowledge through the proposition and development of research projects addressing the etiological agent, the vector, reservoirs, human and canine cases of leishmaniases. Our main purpose is to adress the epidemiological panoramas of the disease, which will serve as experimental models to assist in its prevention and control in different transmission areas in Brazil. is Students from different levels (undergraduate, master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral) participate in the development of research projects as part of human scientific training activities.

Research Lines:

  • Biological, biochemical and molecular characterization of Leishmania parasites;
  • Epidemiological studies to assist in prevention and control of leishmaniases;
  • Studies on the genetic variability of phlebotomine sand flies and Leishmania parasites;
  • Diagnostic methods of leishmaniases;
  • Classical and molecular taxonomy of phlebotomine sand flies.
