IMTEV
The MILENIUM INSTITUTE FOR VACCINE TECHNOLOGY AND DEVELOPMEN (IMTEV) will be structured into two divisions. The Division of Science and Vaccine Technology will include the following sections: (i) Antigen discovery, (ii) Vaccine Engineering, (iii) Adjuvant Discovery and (iv) Testing of Adjuvant Activity. In addition to classical and high throughput strategies for discovery of immunodominant antigens, the studies performed in this Division will be focused on two areas that have great impact on the development of vaccines that aim to induce persistent cell-mediated immunity and immunological protection against intracellular pathogens. The first one is the characterization of structure and adjuvant activity of microbial molecules that activate the innate immune compartment through the Toll-Like Receptors. The second area is the use of recombinant viral vectors that deliver the vaccine antigen into the correct cellular compartment for activation of CD8+ T lymphocytes.The Division of Vaccine Development will be structured based on the partnership of the IMTEV with private and public companies involved in the production of vaccines. In this Division we aim to perform (i) pre-clinical trials; (ii) production of vaccines in GMP conditions; and (iii) clinical trials of vaccines that are in advanced stage of development. We believe that the IMTEV will serve as a bridge for technology transfer from Research Institutes and Universities to the Industry involved in the production of vaccines of medical or veterinary relevance. In the three years period necessary for development of this project, we should be able to deliver one or more product(s) to be tested for scale-up production in GMP conditions as well as in clinical trials by the already committed Biotechnological Industries.
