Experimental and Human Malaria
Leaders: Antoniana Ursine Krettl and Nubia Boechat
Focus: Malaria
Mission:Â Basic and applied research on malaria, studying the interaction between the plasmodium and its vertebrate and invertebrate hosts, using immunologic and molecular approaches aiming at understanding the mechanisms of protective immunity, and the development of vaccines and new drugs. The group is also dedicated to the development of human resources for the activities of teaching and research.
Lines of Research:
- Development of sporozoites of the Plasmodium gallinaceum and use of it as an experimental model for studies of antimalarial;
- Identification of markers of acquired resistance in the human malaria;
- Anti-malarial medicinal plants – in vitro and invivo pharmacological tests of activity;
- Tests of cytotoxicity in synthetic compounds or natural products;
- Antimalarial experimental chemotherapy with emphasis on medicinal plants;
- Activity of synthesized molecules  in the inhibition of malaria transmission.
